I've got a question that doesn't start out
being about Freevo, but I'll get there -
be patient.
I've been lurking for a year or two and
thought "if anyone would know the answer to
this question, it would be these guys".
I have a wide-screen Dell laptop on a
swinging monitor arm sitting 18" from my face
as I sit in my armchair at home, so I may be
the exception to the rule that "no one watches
movies on their laptop".
That's exactly what I want to do.
I have a firewire input carrying the cable
signal that I can access just fine with
Kino and with dvgrab - no problem.
What I want to do is
- just watch the danged firewire input live,
full screen
I do not need to (or want to - yet):
- record
- transcode
- stream
- mux,demux, or otherwise transmogrify anything
This sounds so simple, but I've been experimenting
and reading on the net for about 2 weeks now
and have only gotten 1 variant to work -
- vlc server transmogifying it and streaming it
as http to port 1234
- watching that with mplayer
This setup looks like poo - _and_, even if you
_could_ stand how awful it looks (I can't) it's
so badly lagged for the transcoding that listening
to the sound over my stereo really messes
with my mind.
Could someone point me to the secret guru source ...
or type the 2-line incantation I need - I'm
completely frustrated that something this basic
is so hard to find on google - surely
it _is_ possible!
The freevo connection is - when my replacement
Infocus X1 comes in, I'm going to drag a box
with mega disk space over and install freevo.
When I do, I want to use Freevo to control
(through lirc?) the cablebox and record
1394 straight to disk (yes - I _do_ know
that takes 13GB/hour - I already have 1.5TB
available and may add more later) - and maybe
transcode something I want to keep to something
more reasonable - so long as it doesn't turn it
to mush (or maybe I'll just archive to DVD
analog-aly by recording on my external
dvd-recorder thingie as I view it.)
This is a prerequisite for my using freevo -
which I think is so kewel. I have installed
and used it before (as a file playing
Kiosk-sort-of-thing, not a TV - yet) - please
say it's do-able.
