IMHO, far worse than top posting is bottom posting a huge email without pruning quoted text. I get annoyed when I have to scroll-scroll-scroll through stuff I've already read just to see the poster's reply. In an ongoing discussion, top posting makes at least some amount of sense. But in a medium like a mailing list, newsgroup, or forum where the discussion history is archived, quoting isn't meant for keeping the entire discussion handy for newcomers but rather it's used for establishing context for those participating in the thread. Back in the BBS and early usenet days, most people took care in the formatting of their replies. Nowadays it's sadly a lost art. People are too lazy or don't care.
