It seems a reasonable way... I'm not sure if it is the driver or the hardware. I've got five Hauppauge ivtv cards and the sound levels and picture quality varies a *lot*, two are really bad both in picture quality and sound levels. The picture quality should be as good as when the coax cable is directly to a TV. If it isn't take it back and complain. To prove this I swapped a bad card for a good one in the same PCI slot, same driver and the difference was immediately apparent.
