Not all, I use X on my purpose built media center. The only caveat is you
need either a IR remote and receiver or some other way (bluetooth dongle
and phone) that won't be intercepted by X and sent to the in focus window.
I use an IRMan receiver and an old Hauppauge remote to control freevo.

In fact if you don't use X you won't be able to see the lovely new
dialogs/on screen displays the livepause plugin uses (you will need
kaa.display installed for this, get it from the subversion repository).

One final thing don't bother with a window manager, you won't need it!
