I switched from Debian to Ubuntu because of these things... I'm afraid I
don't know how to configure udev. All I had to do wih my cards was to save
the proper firmware file in /lib/firmware. Even now Ubuntu does include
every firmware, so the cards work seamlessly.
Perhaps you should try a live cd to see if the card works (kubuntu 8.04 or
Knoppix).
