mplayer doesn't have an on-the-fly zoom capability as far as I can see. (Anyone know better?) So I guess one would have to write some python code which would stop and restart mplayer with extra cropping, in order to obtain a zoom. Another possibility, which I am thinking of trying, would be to just output in 4:3 and to use the television's own zoom/16:9 control to adapt to the image (4:3, letterbox or 16:9).
