just to add some more information
I reran freevo setup and allowed it to default back to 800x600
reinstalled vlc and it has now started working but takes a long time to buffer
if i try it with xine it fails and kills the livepause plugin and if i try it
with mplayer it works to a point and then the logs just say

and this event DATA_Aquired just keeps on looping....
