Try just using: MPLAYER_AO_DEV = 'alsa:device=default' or possibly: MPLAYER_AO_DEV = 'alsa:device=hw=0.0' This is very hardware specific. And don't set MPLAYER_AO_DEV_OPTS I'm assuming that you have connected your audio card to an external amp. Then you can set -afm hwac3 for certain file types.
