I had a setup for lircmd that worked, although it was an awful hack. Essentially, the firefox icon in freevo was a bash script that: a) stopped lirc b) swapped out the lirc configuration file to one that had different names, so freevo didn't interpret them, c) started lircmd, setup to use these files d) started firefox e) when firefox finishes, put everything back as it was. This is a nasty hack though, as you have to add lirc stuff to sudoers to get permissions. Also, you have to start lircmd running even with the freevo configuration as it has to be started in the correct order with X on boot. (so that lircmd is created correctly). There should be a better way allowing you to put lirc into different modes but I didn't get this working. I can send the scripts later if they are useful, although they are system specific and require other hackery. I recently swapped this setup for "boxee" which has most of the same internet music/video sources in a much more user-friendly package than firefox with a remote.
