Hi all,

Not really the right place, but before I subscribe to alsa / mplayer to
try and work out what was wrong I thought I would start here :)

I've got an ASRock ION-330, and I'm trying to get surround sound sorted
out. It is an ION system (Nvidia 9400).

I use the following mplayer command:

mplayer master_and_commander.iso -ao alsa:device=hw=0.1 -ac help -channels 6

Which outputs the digital audio over the optical spdif output, which
when plugged in to my surround amp quite happily switched into 5.1 mode
and plays the audio correctly.

However if I try to output via HDMI (hw=0.3), and then run the optical
out from the TV into the surround sound amp, the amp doesn't switch into
digital mode and I get lots of digital garbage noise that the amp tries
to output as stereo. I get the same noise from the TV but I didn't
expect the TV to actually decode and output the surround sound.

Is this a setting problem in alsa / driver / mplayer? Or is this simply
because the TV is doing the wrong thing? I'm inclined to believe the
that TV is failing to decode the digital signal and effectively sending
out stereo noise bitstream rather than just passing through the digital
signal. (It's a Samsung 32inch LCD - LE32B450).

If people also think this is the case then I'll contact Samsung, there
is a newer firmware version which might solve the problem, but they
don't give out patch notes and I don't really want to upgrade the
firmware unless it will really help!

Any thoughts / opinions welcome.

Cheers,

Steve.
