thanks for the suggestion.  i actually tried (and currently use) the full 
path and that doesn't work either.  in fact, in the actual script i have a 
bunch of debugging stuff that show nc actually starting, and i do 
get it's PID.  but, what happens after that remains a mystery... <g>
