Are you running Gentoo?
I had the same problem after upgrading python to version 2.6.

Look in the bug tracker, you'll find a patch which should help you. It 
should be included in the latest svn, too.
I didn't use it as I resolved in a different way. If the patch doesn't 
help, and you're running Gentoo, just let me know.
