You could try following the instruction I posted on the wik... dang... I
take that back, I haven't had any time to post on the wiki.  :-\  Maybe
next time I'm sick, I'll sit in front of the computer & type.

I have terrible times with Ubuntu, every other time I reboot I have to
service lirc restart and then service freevo_xserver restart just to get
it to work.  That's in addition to a bug that prevented lirc from
working right in the first place.  Probably should have done Debian. 
And heaven help you if you use tv.ivtv_xine_tv - xine is always crashing!

I modified irsend_generic.py; with simple modifications, it works pretty
well.  Better than my Tivo did.  My post was "Ubuntu Lirc Bug / Dish
Network how to" if you want to mess around with adding a delay between
digits, you may find that helpful.
