I have an nVidia 8400 GS in my freevo box and I'm quite happy with it: 
cheap, passive heatsink, hdmi connector and capable to play 1080p h264 
videos with minimal cpu usage.
The problem is that, as far as I know, 8xxx and newer cards are for 
pci-e only, so if your motherboard has an agp bus you're in troubles.
