You mean you can't do /any/ HDMI audio with Intel on Linux, let alone 8
channel LPCM?

I hope that's not true, as SPDIF is really long in the tooth. AFAIK the
only show in town on Linux right now for HD audio bitstreaming is
NVIDIA. I picked up a Zotac Zbox ID36 since it has ION2, but it's got a
poor Atom D525 CPU. It's manageable but it does struggle and it's
appreciably sluggish compared to what I was coming from (a Core 2 quad
at 3GHz) when it comes to general UI use.

The Zbox is nice and small but in the end I decided to just upgrade my
current box (built in a Moneual Moncaso 312) by dropping a discrete
NVIDIA GT610 (fanless and low profile).

Unfortunately I don't think MPlayer supports HD audio bitstreaming yet.
(XBMC does.) But if that's important to you, now or in the future, I
don't think Intel graphics will get you there.
