Hi Ben,
I have friends who run a great new server outsourcing service for ISP's and
other clients. I presented your question to Diane, Randori's VP, and here
is her reply:
Bev,
That is such a huge subject. He didn't even say if he was looking for
"free" software or if he was willing to pay.
Also, we have never found one good place for information on how to set up
the best system for a news server.
We frequently recommend news software called DNEWS. It is not too pricey.
Their web site is at: http://www.netwinsite.com/dnews.htm. They have
pretty good documentation and even though they are located in New Zealand
they do respond to email promptly.
Kevin is happy with a Penguin Relion400s we bought recently running Linux.
Basically here are the step:
1. choose your operating system
2. choose your hardware
3. determine if you are going to carry all groups and for how long- this
will
help determine how much disk space you need (we get about 150GB of new
news
per day and we have 1.3Terrabytes of disk space!)
4. choose the news server software
5. buy a news feed (several hundred $$ per month)
or arrange for news peers (free except for the cost of bandwidth)
Our question for this individual is why in the world would he want
to put all the time, money, and energy into running his own news server
when he can outsource with us?!? :)
Regards,
