Peter,
The install of Mysql via the RH7 or 7.1 is a little flakey... The owner ship of
the /var/lib/mysql directory should be mysql:root, as well as the mysql and test
databases... Also, there is a script /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql (or mysqld) which
offer several benefits when starting and stopping mysql. Try (as root) doing
/etc/rc.d/init.d/mysqld stop and then /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysqld start... wait then
hit enter... if you don't get the message mysqld ended, you're in business...
type mysqladmin status as root... and see if it connects....
