I think I am going to read all of the sources before I post anything
else to this list.  Typically if I have to read sources rather than
supplied docs I will scrap the idea of using a project, but freeVSD
just seems to good to pass up.  I have a warehouse full of quad xeons
that are just begging to be put to work on something like this.

We have been fairly successful extending pre-built skels using the
'rpm --root' command, or even just popping files into place in the skel
manually, so you should be able to make any additions you wish.
