I can't answer your question on the auth_mysql - however I could point you
towards a patch made a long time ago for the web admin, where it
authenicates from the database - which may be simpler to use in many
situations.

I couldnt find it in the archives, just email me / the list if you cant
either, because I have the file, and the email
