1.- log or bevs to a virtual server and do:

more /etc/passwd

you'll see there all the users in the virtual.

2.- any user (including admin) can untar packages!... *as
long* as it has the right permissions! (both in the tar file
and in the dir where is untaring)

3.- you could have problems compiling a package as admin if
the package tries to write files in a directory owned by
root!... and that's *good*, you do not want to have different
files in the different vs's owned by root... backing up all
of that could be a nightmare.

you need to read all the package documentation and then, as
admin, try to install under /usr/local
