This has got me stuffed. I've several times deleted and re-created a new
virtual server/virtual domain/virtual user as per the docs and made notes.

1/ mail from within the new VS will deliver to the v_user at v_domain OK.
2/ mail from within a different VS will deliver to the new v_user at v_domain in
new_VS OK.
3/ mail from the host server will fail with "user unknown" but no log entry in the VS
These above are CLI posts as per docs.

4/ mail from home will fail with "relaying denied", as expected with nothing
relevant in sendmail.cw.
5/ if the domain is added to sendmail.cw, then mail fails with "user unknown" in
the VS log - this fails both from home and from a CLI within the VS.
6/ adding a real user ('useradd') will allow mail to be delivered, *but* it gets
delivered to /var/spool/mail rather than to the virtual mailbox.

I'm not at all sure what to do next ....
