If you're having problems using mod_auth_mysql, I'd recommend looking into using vsdadmauth.phtml that is mentioned in Ben's faq on fubra.com ( http://www.fubra.com/vsdfaq/ down in the tools and extras section) We are using this method of authentication and are happy with the results.
