Damion: I just found an answer to this one. A few days ago I had to recompile sh-utils because of some pam troubles. Now it seems that the net-tools package also has a hostname program and this is the one that is used and not the gnu sh-utils one. So I recompiled the net-tools package, ran my skel generation script over it the skel filesystem and the problem was gone!

The only thing I can put it down to is the possibility of one of the rc scripts containing a 'hostname -s -i' command instead of 'hostname -i'.
