Actually, I converted an entire BSD to it...
If your terminal (emulation) doesn't support UTF-8, I suggest to
use GNU screen on the remote side:
cat >>~/.screenrc <<-EOF
defutf8 on
setenv LC_CTYPE en_US.UTF-8
EOF
