Hi, I'm looking to create a centrally controlled wireless network.
Essentially, a bundle of open source projects, that does what the netgear wireless switch - WFS709TP does. http://www.netgear.co.uk/extra/wireless_smart_switch_wfs709tp.php [http://www.netgear.co.uk/extra/wireless_smart_switch_wfs709tp.php] I decided the best best was to base the bundle on SNMP, mainly because I don't know of any other network management protocol. However, I couldn't find any software that specifically deals with centrally managed wireless, so I looked into some generalised open source network management software. I contacted OpenNMS and they told me, if I can find a network device which supports SNMP for management, then their OpenNMS will provide management for it. However, as this is going to be an Open Source bundle, why settle for manufacturer, propriety firmware. So, i'm wondering, does freewrt support the IETF SNMP standard for management, to the extent where a fully SNMP compliant NMS will be able to centrally manage the wireless AP's? Or is a different project more suitable for my needs? Is using SNMP the best option for achieving a centrally managed wireless system? If anyone can make any recommendations for me, i'd be very greatful. I'd also be greatful to know, if someone has already developed a bundle/system, like the one I'm working on. There's no point in re-inventing the wheel.
