Hi Gregor, Thanks for the quick reply. Best of luck with your time in the army. If you have any docs on your progress with supporting the ALIX hardware I'd love to take a look and see what's involved in finishing it.
The Compex WP188 uses the IXP425 (clocked at 533Mhz), has 128MB RAM (possibly 256MB is some configurations) and 16MB flash (or 32MB). It only has two 10/100 Ethernet ports, but does have 4x Mini-PCI ports and an SD slot. They also seem to promote usage of OpenWRT on their devices, which should suggest that supporting these is within the realms of possibility. Full details over http://www.compex.com.sg/home/OEM/product_ap.htm (The NP18A is also interesting). If anyone has any other suggestions for suitably fast hardware I'd love to hear them. Broadly speaking, I'm looking for something that can handle 100Mbps comfortably to the device's CPU itself (not across switch-ports or a bridge). I would have thought that the 500Mhz+ chips might do this, but I have some testing of my own to do on this :) Also, I just noticed a typo in my previous post - I meant to say that I would be happy to donate a unit if it'd help in creating support for it.
