you gotta check this out
Various meditative disciplines have a variation on
the 'long dark night of the soul' - a period of doubt and contemplation just
prior to an enlightenment experience.
As luck would have it, the guy who wrote this site
had such a long dark night (or 'stage 11' as he calls it). As luck would also
have it, he happens to be skilled in system analysis and so we have a system
dynamics model of a long dark night.

I haven't read it yet, but I would offer one caveat
to anyone who wants to. People who write this sort of stuff have either been
studying psychology / religion for some time, or they are nuts (ok, maybe a few
non-religious non-psychologist non-nutty ppl may occasionally come up with
stuff... but *generally*....) And most people who devote their life to
psychology or religion don't end up being experts on system dynamics
theory.
But I suppose he might not be
nuts...
