Phil,

The best way to answer you may be to refer you to a nice overview of
causation written by my colleague Richard Scheines:

http://www.hss.cmu.edu/philosophy/scheines/causation.pdf

He is a member of Glymour's team. Most of their work deals with
"type-causation" or "causation among variables" (diabetes, diet, taxes,
public policy, lead exposure, IQ, etc.). It has also, however, been
applied to inferring gene regulatory networks. The paper in the book
"Causation and Explanation" was about what is called "actual causation"
or "token causation". An example of the latter is "The Columbia
accident was caused by a piece of insulating foam hitting the wing".

I hope that helps.

Frank

Frank, does it distinguish between physical processes, and all their
complex hierarchies of multi-scale behavior, and the explanations for
them we find easier to use? I'd certainly be interested in reading
anyone with another developed point of view on that.
