The transition to a predominantly urban world and its underpinnings
 <http://www.iied.org/pubs/display.php?o=10550IIED> coverDavid Satterthwaite
This paper describes the dramatic changes in the size of the world's urban
population and of its largest cities over the last 100 years. This includes
the almost tenfold increase in the average size of the world's 100 largest
cities between 1900 and 2000. It describes the changing distribution of
cities between regions. The paper also explains how and why the world is
actually less urbanised and less dominated by large cities than expected and
questions whether rapid urbanisation will continue in Africa.

Forest resources and rural livelihoods in the north-central regions of
Namibia
 <http://www.iied.org/pubs/display.php?o=15506IIED> coverJames MacGregor,
Charles Palmer, Jonathan Barnes
This paper reports on results from a household survey of forest resources
use in the north-central regions of Namibia, focusing on the four relatively
densely settled rural areas, which also include several small rapidly
developing urban nodes. It addresses the concern that both poverty and
economic development are driving over-utilisation of forest resources. We
applied a dynamic modelling approach in order to develop policy pointers
that can maximise poverty alleviation and conservation benefits as Namibia
develops.
