T. Boone Pickens' Mesa Power buys first batch of turbines for 4,000 MW wind farm in Texas: Rich Murray 2008.07.13
Taking the most concrete action yet on what would be by far the world's largest wind facility, Mesa Power, LP, said May 15 it has ordered 667 of General Electric's 1.5-MW turbines for the 4,000-MW wind facility that Texas oil man T. Boone Pickens's company is planning. The turbines are for 2010 and 2011 delivery; the $2 billion first phase of the Pampa Wind Farm in Texas, which would be by far the world's largest wind facility, is expected to go online in early 2011. Mesa Power has leased land in Carson, Gray, Hemphill, Roberts and Wheeler counties for the project. The entire project is to consist of four phases. Currently, the largest wind farm is FPL Energy's 736-MW Horse Hollow facility in Texas. Pickens indicated he is counting on the extension of the federal production tax credit in order for the project to work. "I believe that Congress will recognize that it is critical not only to this project, but to renewable energy in this country, that they enact a long-term extension of the production tax credits," he said. "The development of alternative energy projects, especially renewable resources such as wind power, is critical for the future of the country in the face of declining world oil resources. You find an oil field, it peaks and starts declining, and you've got to find another one to replace it. It can drive you crazy.
