I'd not heard of the Golomb ruler before but after grokking it, it seems to me a fascinating problem that likely occurs in many scenarios.

It's a bit disappointing that:
"It has been proven that no perfect Golomb ruler exists for five or more marks" .. otherwise we could invent short rulers that are guaranteed to span their length. Sigh.
