I was astounded to find out that the ATT iPhone 4 GSM phone was not compatible
with european high bandwidth (3G/4G) frequencies and protocols.

This led me to look into Android, and there too, there were rumors of a similar
nature and confusion about compatibility.

So here's the question: Have any of us actually used the same GSM phone in the
US and in Europe with the high bandwidth data capabilities?

A brief survey of travelers I know recently showed that they don't use data
plans in Europe, its too difficult to get pay-as-you-go plans. They simply get
a voice/sms SIM, and use WiFi for data.

But things are changing rapidly, so I would like to at least have a chance of a
single phone that was mobile, i.e. worked both in the US and Europe, including
high bandwidth.
