Scientists create first-ever synthetic chromosome for

An international team of scientists created the first synthetic chromosome
for yeast, "moving the needle in synthetic biology from theory to reality,"
said team leader Jef Boeke of the Langone Medical Center at New York
University. "What's really exciting about it is the extent to which we have
changed the sequence and still come out with a happy healthy yeast at the
end," he added. The tweaks included eliminating repeated sections of the
original DNA as well as "junk" DNA, and adding "special widgets" that give
the chromosome new functions.
