We've discussed 2-factor authentication in the past, but its always had
just a few sites using it.

Its hard to say how successful these will be.  Google's authenticator app
is being used by multiple services which reduces the number of apps you
need.

I'm not sure if the idea of "knows machines" is a large risk: the 2 factor
PIN is not needed beyond the first login on a particular machine.

But its a step in the right direction.
