Press the soft button to the left of the home button. This pops up a kind of task manager with a list of running tasks. Swipe on a task to end the task.
Works on my Samsung Galaxy J1 Ace running Android 4.4.4. This feature is fairly new, so YMMV. On my previous phone, you had to do it through the application manager (in settings), and it was a PITA.
