To: Tom Johnson <[email protected]> I have volunteered with ACLU as a Legal Observer monitoring police interactions with protesters. I was asked to work the latest demonstrations but declined because of Covid. Nevertheless, I'm on the Signal channel so I can see and hear what they see and hear. And it is very disturbing. The LOs have been gassed multiple times in even a single protest. They have so many flash-bangs land at their feet that they are now concerned about repeated concussions. They are using their own money to buy safety equipment including respirators and ear protection. The demonstrations have been doing on for seven weeks. They began with George Floyd response but it has evolved to include police violence as well. And every night the police confirm they use excessive force, even on peaceful protesters. ACLU won a temporary injunction to block police from arresting or detaining LOs and reporters. Then the fed cops come in and are not under that court order. In fact, we don't know the legal basis for any of their actions. If you want to follow, use #portlandprotest.
