IMO, genes are no more *the* unit of selection than anyone's privileged flavor of set theory is *the* foundations for mathematics. I assume people actually doing the work in the field set units to the scale they are working. I have really enjoyed thinking about Eric'S at "the level of the citric acid cycle" concept.
