Thanks! Definitely a find. I don't know Cris well... just a few
interactions, but always very satisfying/fascinating. This discussion
really expands that feeling.
the /mlst podcast is (also) new to me and threatens to be a rabbit hole
(warrent) to tumble into...
Specifically from the chat. I found as an attractor, our never-ending
(maybe it is just me) return to "effing the ineffable" is the following
GPT summary of a discussion we (GPT and me (sic)) on the topic.
His use of "mathemetizing" was apt and felt clarifying to me. I have
always held that "once a problem is properly formulated, the answer
becomes "obvious". This topic also covers (but far from answers) the
question of whether we are "discovering structure" in nature or
"imposing it"?
There are two camps:
1.
Replicator-first (information primary)
2.
Metabolism-first (energy flow primary)
This mirrors:
*
Code-first AI (symbolic recursion primary)
*
Embodied AI (energy/action coupling primary)
If you take this seriously, it reframes intelligence:
Is intelligence primarily:
*
Symbol manipulation?
*
Or energy-gradient navigation?
*
Or something that emerges when both lock together?

Yeah. I love how he keeps drawing the interviewer's attention back to
the problem of posing problems. While I am listening to Cris speak, I
keep thinking "This frog is shitting bird food!"
