If the "best" or "most true" is relatively smooth from the 1st
best to the 2nd best, 3rd best, etc., then NO, you do not reject
"all the others". Such smooth grading has to remain contingent,
defeasible. And my guess is the gradation isn't smooth everywhere.
It may be smooth for the first 2 or 3 distinguishable ideas, but

in the interest of not running off in all directions again forever, I
clipped a single paragraph/thought and will attempt stay focused on the
tangent it triggered in me:
Given Nick's appeal to you (and other's) CS idioms of topic, what you
describe here makes me think that what you are gesturing at is a
qualitative annealing schedule/mechanism. I anneal metal at my
blacksmith's forge to the following pattern:
# * Annealing*: release accumulated constraint and restore flexibility.
# *Hardening/quenching*: commit strongly into a constrained
high-energy structure.
# *Tempering*: selectively relax that commitment so it does not become
fragile.
In practical blacksmithing (mostly tool making including, I suppose, the
canonical samurai sword) the point is usually to differentially harden
a cutting edge while leaving the backing bulk less brittle. It
includes doing the bulk of the sharpening of a cutting edge before final
hardening (and final, but tedious, sharpening of the last bit of the
edge detail)
While I've used the analogical methods in simulation/search programming
(my idiosynctratic re-implementations) I don't know the precise binding
(if there is one) in CS formalisms (as far as I know, simulated
annealing wasn't in the lexicon in my formative 70s-80s period).
