Probably with a little forethought is would be possible to support
users without Unicode support by providing alternate (long and
awkward) names for the symbols and symbol combinations that you use.

One thing that I didn't mention yet was one thing that bothers me
quite often: an insufficient number of suitable infix symbols.
Yes that would be great, but I guess that it will change the way that
SPAD code is parsed and is probably not all too easy to implement.
But it is at least a step forward to be able to define prefix functions.
One big problem I see with unicode is inputting the expressions. I had
bad experience with some papers about Mathematica packages. They told me
to enter certain symbols that are not on my keyboard. Looking for how to
enter the symbol corresponding to \mapsto or other uncommon letters can
be a nightmare.
Looking through palettes is usually quite time consuming if you don't
know in which of the many palettes the symbol is.
