I admit that I forgot about PARSE_-INTEGER (I do not know why
original low level routines use READ_-FROM_-STRING).  Testing
shows that for small numbers sbcl PARSE_-INTEGER is much
faster than READ_-FROM_-STRING, but for larger the opposite
holds.
