The number is prepended in 'mathprintWithNumber' in 'i-output.boot'.
If you set '$IOindex' to nil, then nothing is prepended:

(1) -> )boot $IOindex := nil
(EVAL-WHEN (EVAL LOAD) (SETQ |$IOindex| NIL))
Value = NIL
(NIL) -> 1 + 1

   2
                                                        Type: PositiveInteger
