I have extensive experience configuring `xterm` — not for me to say if
properly or not. Wayland works great for me for many years and I do
not miss the old times. But I think this conversation is off the topic
of this mailing list.

* How many systems have been sunset because of too much deference?
* How many systems have been sunset because of too little deference?

I agree that chasing every fashion is stupid, especially for a
research project that only a few people in the world can meaningfully
contribute to. But scaring away prospective users is a vicious circle.

One way forward with respect to launching a terminal emulator is to
have a setting for this and try a few popular terminal emulators as a
fallback. As I understand, the story with configuration files is
difficult right now. But hanging the whole program in response to a
click is simply bad engineering. Why does it need another terminal
emulator anyway? It already has one.

To be specific, what I do is:

* start FriCAS with HyperDoc
* navigate: References — Topics — Solving Equations — Solution of a
Single Polynomial Equation
* click `solve(x^3 = 8, x)`
