Dear All,
A few date corrections are needed in my letter below:
After about a year, Mountbatten arrived from England on March 22, 1947 [ NOT in
July 1947 ] with his plan to partition India and the Mountbatten Plan was
presented to the State Assemblies.
The members of Punjab Assembly voted [ June 24, 1947 ] in support of the
Mountbatten Plan and accepted partition of Punjab.
The members of Bengal Assembly voted [ June 20, 1947 ] in support of the
Mountbatten Plan and accepted partition of Bengal.

People of Punjab and Bengal, who voted in support of partition of their own
states, are now blaming Mahatma Gandhi for partition of Punjab and Bengal.
On the contrary, people of Assam rejected partition as early as 1946 (schemed
in the Grouping Plan) under the leadership of Gopinath Bardoloi, who went to
Mahatma Gandhi. The Mahatma could then oppose the Imperialist British --- their
Grouping Plan of 1946 got rejected.

Assam will remain grateful to the Mahatma, and to the Assamese Muslim members
in the Legislative Assembly of Assam, for help and support in rejecting the
Grouping Plan in 1946.
With love to all,
Himendra
PS: Dates are very crucial in understanding history of fast-moving events.
Please correct me if I made any mistake.

Dear All,
The endearing article written by sister of Wahid Saleh highlighted the
adoration, acceptance and appreciation of the Hindu neighbors to the Muslim
neighbors in the area ( Balibat of Jorhat ) where she grew up.
Assam must not forget the contribution of Assamese Muslims in saving Assam from
the Cabinet Mission Grouping Scheme (March 1946) that tried to expel Assam from
India and make it a part of Pakistan.
Gopinath Bardoloi defeated the Cabinet Mission Scheme with blessings from
Mahatma Gandhi and support from the Assamese Muslim MLAs of the "Assembly" who
rejected the Grouping Plan in March 1946.

Within a matter of a few weeks ( politics were moving fast in those days ),
Sarat Bose combined with Suhrawardy to present a plan for partition of India by
carving out a "Greater Bengal" out of India. The Assamese Muslims helped
Gopinath once again in 1946 to turn down this ignominious plan.
After about a year, Mountbatten arrived from England in July 1947 with his plan
to partition India and the Mountbatten Plan was presented to the State
Assemblies.
The members of Punjab Assembly voted [ please find out the date ] in support of
the Mountbatten Plan and accepted partition of Punjab.
The members of Bengal Assembly voted [ please find out the date ] in support of
the Mountbatten Plan and accepted partition of Bengal.

Once again, Assamese Muslim MLAs of Assam Assembly voted to ascertain a solid
ground for Assam in India.

It is worthwhile to understand and study why the Assamese Muslims behave
differently from the Muslims of the rest of India and rest of the world.

Let me share my personal experience:
In 1968 I was busy in Guwahati building a cold-storage plant for the
Agriculture department. We were replacing ammonia gas with freon gas in the new
cooling system ( I am talking about the year 1968 ), but we did not have a
freon expert in Assam --- The expert who came from Calcutta was a Muslim--- let
us call him "Amin". He was an excellent worker. Within a couple of weeks, Amin
told me privately if I could help him get a permanent posting at the Assam
Agriculture Department because he did not want to go back to Calcutta. When I
asked why, he gave me a lengthy reply that was very similar to what Wahid's
adorable sister is now writing in her article : People of Assam [ Amin told me
in no uncertain terms ] has an open mind and a warm heart.

My this letter is already very long. Let me stop here, with an appeal to all to
continue the discussion and find out why " People of Assam has an open mind and
a warm heart. "

With love to all,
Himendra

On 16th June 2016 Amar Asom/Page 10 published an article on the subject
"Religion versus Humanity: Some memories of life". I have attached a PDF
version also.
Thought some of you might find interesting. The writer is my elder sister.
