Ok, it doesn't like me. I set my vars to where my JDK sits. Same error. 
I just followed these instruction to set up my JDK stuff: 
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-java-faq/ch11.html#s11.2

Perhaps I made a mistake when trying to get the compiler to work (?) 
...you were saying javac and I had to apt-get jikes because 'man javac' 
in kronos brought it up as "jikes."
