I apologize for having left the meeting so abruptly- I had a pretest review session for a biology class that I needed to attend at 7pm. I will stay for the whole meeting next time, I promise!
I don't want to be one of those people who comes and gets what they want then disappears without ever making any contribution. I am a rank amateur with Linux, having just gotten it working on an old, resource-challenged laptop so it will be a while before I can contribute any knowledge other than my immediate experience with that installation. As I struggle to install applications I'll slowly get up to speed and maybe some day be able to help someone else get a machine going. On the other hand, being a nontraditional student type, I can say that Alex's (?) statements at the meeting about having something beyond class-work on one's resume is truly beneficial when it comes to seeking employment after graduation, and it is especially important to getting the sort of work you really want to do. It is very easy to get steered away from your real interest when the recruiters are waving hiring bonuses and other benefits in front of your face, so it is best to get involved in as many different fields as interest you while you are in school so you get a better idea of what you really want to do (or at least to learn what you don't want to do) when the time comes. You also make a much better impression at job interviews when you have something to talk about in depth, so it is very important to try to develop some expertise in something that goes beyond your school work. See you all at the installfest! Mark Rehorst __________________________________________________________________ Switch to Netscape Internet Service.
