I am currently adding a section on free software to my personal website, which I am building for Internet Programming. It will have a discussion and links to relavant sites. The idea is that it can serve as an introduction to those who might have heard of free software before but don't know much about it. So I have to decide what to include. Obviously, I will talk about the GPL and Copyleft, but I haven't decided what else should be there. Maybe some history and some examples of the ways in which free software is used (e.g. education, government, embedded systems, public servers, etc.).

So what am I getting at? I would like some feedback from all of you on what you think should be there. What do think are the essential core ideas behind free software? What are the most important things that someone should know about it? Any and all feedback is welcome, and if you are feeling ambitions you can write a brief paragraph and I'll include it verbatim (citing it as yours, of course).

Thanks everyone, and enjoy the evening.
