Are you using the the a4paper option for the documentclass tag? As in
\documentclass[a4paper]{article}This is easier than using one of the many a4 packages, most of which are part of the standard Debian installation. If you need a package, though, you can find it at www.tug.org. Hope this helps.

Well, fetching the a4.sty file from mercury got me a step closer -- but not really. Is there a possibly a debian packages that somebody can think of in regard to those error messages I get when trying to use latex on a A4 page:
<Error> (/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/base/size11.clo)) (/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/ntgclass/a4.sty) (/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/graphics/graphicx.sty (/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/graphics/keyval.sty) (/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/graphics/graphics.sty (/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/graphics/trig.sty) (/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/config/graphics.cfg) (/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/graphics/dvips.def))) </Error>
