Just to put my 2 cents in, I have an IBM Thinkpad R40 laptop and works just fine with
Suse Linux 9.1. I don't have any problems with any part of it, to include the built-in
modem and my docking station.

Yes, they are too expensive. I decided to get one from Linux
Certified largely in order to volunteer to be a guinea pig. Several
of us had been looking at this brand for a while and thought that it
might be a good option for someone who needed a stronger-than-normal
guarantee that Linux would work on it. My original inclination was to
get a Dell. Because of some problems with the purchase process, that
turned into a dead end, so I figured I'd go ahead and try the LC
model. I'm very pleased with it so far, in all ways but price. What
you buy for that price is the guarantee. (You also get a bit of a
political statement in not paying anything to M$.) For a newbie, that
may well be worth it. For a pro such as yourself, I'd probably not.

As for suggestions, my tendency is to lean toward the brands that have
or have recently had Linux support: IBM, Dell, HP.
