Not surprising. I run SpamAssassin at work and there are occassional spam bombs that really cause me headaches. DoS mitigation tools help, but only so much. Generally I end up passing a few thousand e-mails that I know are part of the spammer immediately to /dev/null to clear things up, but it can be a bit before anyone notices enough to tell me there's a problem.
